World Down Syndrome Day
We are proud to share Ava’s story and how karate can help tackle loneliness for people with Down syndrome. Created by Paul Abel of Abel Karate and the Be Inspired Project, the film highlights the power of inclusion and belonging.
The film follows Ava, 13, who feels isolated before discovering a karate club where she finds confidence, friendship, and joy. In real life, Ava has trained for five years and continues to grow through her love of the sport.
It also features England athlete Joseph, 25, who made history by winning gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Karate Championships. He has since represented Great Britain internationally and has been selected again for the 2026 European Championships.
Behind it all is Sensei Paul Abel, who has dedicated over 30 years to karate and inclusion. Through the Be Inspired Project, he has created opportunities for people with disabilities to thrive.

Together, their story shows how sport can change lives, build confidence, and bring people together.
